Synopsis and Plot Summary
Set in the late Ming Dynasty during the Tianqi period, The Mutations unravels the tale of an epidemic that strikes a small island outside Ningyuan City. Chu Sijing, a dedicated embroidered uniform guard, embarks on a clandestine mission to investigate the mysterious outbreak.
Amidst unsettling rumors of "demons wreaking havoc" and whispered tales of "patients devoured by monsters", local officials dismissively attribute it to mere typhoid fever, insisting there's nothing unusual. Undeterred, Chu Sijing (Huang Xuan) who's a member of the Jinyiwei is drawn into the mystery, beginning his investigation from Ningyuan City to Ninghai Fort and eventually the isolated Wumu Island.
He encounters formidable forces, including Tartar official Boyan (Wu Yue) and ship captain Angelica (Zhang Rongrong). What started as a routine inquiry transforms into a perilous journey as the island's secrets unravel. Wumu Island, once teeming with life, now resembles a wasteland. Villagers, once reliant on the sea, are forbidden from eating fish, and an eerie overtone suggests hidden truths.
