Synopsis and Plot Summary
It tells the story of the green snake and the white snake who come from a bamboo forest at the foot of Qingcheng Mountain. They are like sisters who have cultivated together for five hundred years until they come to have emotional entanglements with the same man.
The Southern Song Dynasty was a time period where humans and monsters were indistinguishable. Fahai (Vincent Zhao) is a monk who has been hunting down monsters everywhere and his actions have disturbed the white snake and green snake - two snakes who are cultivating at the bottom of the West Lake. Qing (Maggie Cheung) was once rescued by Bai (Joey Wong) and the two address each other as sisters.
Tempted to live among the people, Bai even marries Xu Xian (Wu Hsing-kuo), an honest and upright scholar. Qing also falls in love with Xu Xian and often resorts to seducing him. Bai opens up a pharmacy, thinking that she can live a stable life from thenon, but Xu Xian finally couldn't resist Qing's relentless teasing and even discovers the true identities of Qing and Bai. Although Xu Xian remains reluctant to leave his home. Fa Hai who has learned of the whereabouts of the green and white snake takes Xu Xian away. In order to save Xu Xian, the two womem must face off with Fa Hai...
Fun Facts
- Tsui Hark intended to cast Anita Mui and Gong Li but it did not push through due to scheduling conflicts.
- The studio hired a dance teacher to teach the leads Indian snake dance so they can furthe immerse in their roles.
- Before filming began, Tsui Hark who was still revising the script called Joey Wong who was on vacation in the United States to discuss whether she could play the role and she immediately agreed.
