Synopsis and Plot Summary

On the eve of Zhang Songling's wedding, a traitor's machinations leads to the massacre of his family. The story follows how he resolutely joins the army to fight bravely against the enemy.

In July 1937, the situation in the North is filled with tension as the Japanese army prepares to launch a full-scale war of aggression against China. Heishizhai in Chahar Province may seem calm but the undercurrent is turbulent. What should have been the happiest day of his life turns into a tragedy for gifted scholar Zhang Songling (Zhang Han) when he loses his family in one night.

He vows vengeance and joins the army. Many hard battles help in honing his military prowess thus allowing him to understand that the responsibility of soldiers is to protect the people. Zhang Songling comes to the grassland after sustaining serious injuries. He joins the guerrillas under the leadership of the Communist Party and works to unite the people against a common enemy.
