Synopsis and Plot Summary
Set in the 1950's, the story follows the Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) who went to North Korea to fight US troops. They stood firm amidst subzero temperature and made painful sacrifices to reverse the situation on the battlefield, thus leading to their victory.
Fun Facts
- Shooting was supposed to start in February 2020 but ended up being postponed due to the covoronavirus epidemic in China. Andrew Lau who was supposed to be the director ended up signing on for Chinese Doctors instead.
- The press conference for the booting ceremony was held on October 25, 2020.
- It was announced on May 25, 2021 that filming was completed after 6 months.
- Around forty to fifty special effects companies joined in the making of the film with production costs breaking a new record for Chinese-language movies.
- Most of the scenes were shot outdoors as the crew chose to film on location. The actors and crew had to film in sub zero temperatures.
- As one of the production companies, August First Film Studio provided a lot of support such as military personnel to join in the filming process. At most, there were 2000 people in a single day.
- The number of extras in total exceeded 70,000.
- Its initial August 12, 2021 release date was postponed due to a COVID-19 resurgence in China. It was rescheduled for a premiere in time for the National Day holiday (Oct. 1).
- Huang Xuan takes a special starring role while Ou Hao makes a guest appearance.
- It is part of Bona Pictures' China Victory trilogy that also includes Chinese Doctors.
- It is the most expensive film produced in China to date with a budget of $200 million.
- It has become a blockbuster hit upon release and rose the ranks to become the highest-grossing Chinese film to date.
- It is the second highest-grossing film in 2021 with $905.8 million just behind Spiderman: No Way Home.
