Synopsis and Plot Summary

During the Second Sino-Japanese War in the 1940s, the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party established a nursery school in Yan'an. Revolutionaries risked their lives to protect the next generation.

In 1940, Chou Zigang (Hai Qing), a progressive youth, is appointed by the central government to oversee the establishment of the Yan'an Nursery Institute. Chou Zigang refused thinking that she didn't come to Yan'an to care for children. To her surprise, Mao Zedong was the first to send his daughter Mao Jiaojiao to the nursery. From then on, orphans of martyrs along with descendants of soldiers during the War of Resistance and revolutionary leaders were left under the care of aunties from the countryside who do not have a high education and might not even be literate.

The nursery has witnessed many historical events. When the Kuomintang bombed Yan'an in 1947, Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai ordered the nursery to retreat with the first batch of evacuees. Over 300 people in more than 100 horse carriages came under attack. Chou Zigang took the children along as they followed the People's Liberation Army into Beijing. On the day of the founding ceremony of the nation, the children stood in the square watching the rise of the Five-starred Red Flag.
