Synopsis and Plot Summary
Wang Xuan and Xiao Qi strike a deal for the sake of power. They marry first before falling in love and join hands to protect their homeland. She is a woman who is no less than any man while he rose from humble beginnings.
The imperial family has become rotten to the core. The nobles are lavish with no regard for the people. Princess Wang Xuan (Zhang Ziyi) and her childhood sweetheart, the third prince (Tony Yang), become pawns of a prophecy that states, "to acquire thee is to obtain the world." Being pulled into the matters of the court, Wang Xuan is married off by her father to Xiao Qi (Zhou Yiwei) who comes from a poor family. On the night of their wedding, Xiao Qi is forced to leave the capital. Wang Xuan is shamed and discouraged. The Helan Prince kidnaps Wang Xuan in order to seek revenge on Xiao Qi. The crisis they face becomes a blessing in disguise for the couple. Wang Xuan is moved and inspired by Xiao Qi's wish to bring peace and prosperity to the nation and they fall in love.
However, circumstances threaten to destroy them. The Wang and Xie clans are fighting for power, the Empress Dowager schemes to separate husband and wife, the military has committed treason while the Helan clan has raised their flags in rebellion. Wang Xuan puts her life on the line to escort the third prince to safety. She leads an army of men to defend the last stronghold in hopes that Xiao Qi can arrive in time with reinforcements. Together, they join hands to create a new era.
Fun Facts
- It is actress Zhang Ziyi's first Chinese drama. Being a Yimou Girl, she has starred strictly in movies throughout her acting career.
- Filming took place in Hengdian and Xiangyang Tangcheng.
- It was rumored in 2016 that Hu Ge and Zhang Ziyi will headline the drama.
- In March 2018, there were photos from the boot ceremony that leaked online.
- Filming wrapped after 273 days of filming in November 2018 which is longer than average. The drama is expected to be long with 80 episodes.
- The title was changed from the novel's Emperor’s Conquest (Di Wang Ye) to Empress's Conquest (Di Feng Ye) for the drama adaptation. The new poster reveals that the title has been changed again to Monarch Industry.
- There was heated debate about Zhang Ziyi playing 15-year-old princess at the beginning which was also marketed by the drama. The actress says there's nothing wrong with being called young but she also asked that they don't force it upon her because she was 38 when she played the role and will be turning 42 soon.
- Angie Chiu, Kara Hui and Yuan Hong take special starring roles.
