Synopsis and Plot Summary
A long-drawn war of revenge and hegemony between the states of Wu and Yue opens the curtains to the stories of important figures in history and follows Fan Li Xi Shi and Fan Li who fall in love and sacrifice their personal interests for the sake of their country.
The Wu state defeated the Yue state in 494 BCE. King Goujian is captured and enslaved at the Wu palace for three years. Even after he was sent home, Goujian's drastic actions to endure the humiliation he suffered is later referred to in history as "sleeping on sticks and tasting gall" 卧薪尝胆. Keeping his advisors close, Goujian commissions the help of military strategist Fan Li (Han Geng) to help in his plan to restore the kingdom of Yue.
A beautiful woman wearing a veil, Xi Shi (Tong Liya) was once an ordinary citizen of Yue. Not wanting to be a slave to another country, she bids farewell to her lover Fan Li and goes to the state of Wu as a spy. King Fu Chai (Peter Ho) turns a deaf ear to the Wu ministers who warn him to be vigilant against Goujian. While Wu conquered to expand its territories, Yue accumulated its power to wait for the time when they can finally strike back.
