Synopsis and Plot Summary
A story that follows the legendary life of Xiao Yanyan who is forced by circumstances to bid goodbye to an old lover and marry a man she does not love. Her journey leads her to become the revered empress of the Liao Dynasty.
Xiao Yanyan (Tang Yan) is a young woman who had everything. She has a family she cherished and a man named Han Derang (Shawn Dou) whom she loved dearly. Alas, obligations have destined Xiao Yanyan to marry Yelü Xian (Jing Chao), the emperor of the Liao dynasty. Ever since the day she became his empress, her determination and dedication towards the people never ceased. Over time, the royal couple were able to build a mutual relationship of trust and respect, yet another misfortune has befallen them allowing for her relationship with Han Derang to blossom once more. Throughout her life, Xiao Yanyan proves her prowess as she shoulders greater responsibilities in governing the nation.

- Hong Kong actress Charmaine Sheh who successfully transitioned to Chinese dramas as an intriguing villain in Story of Yanxi Palace nabs the role as a villain again.
- There were many rumors that Tang Yan who was speculated to be pregnant at the time was being given star treatment and that she had 50 staff to attend to her. The producer denied such rumors and clarified Tang Yan only had 2 staff.
- Xiao Yanyan existed in Chinese history as a Khitan empress and military leader during the Liao Dynasty.
- Much effort was put into recreating historical artefacts from Khitan graves.
