Synopsis and Plot Summary

It tells the story of preserving Confucian ideals during a time of crisis and upholding proper values in commerce amidst the face of many pressures through the eyes of one upstanding man.

It explores a place called Zhangjiakou near the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republican era. Zhangjiakou is a big port in China that is second only to Shanghai with over 1000 domestic merchants and nearly 50 foreign merchants. The Lyu family is one of the four great merchants in the region. However, a series of conspiracies takes place after the death of their patriarch Old Master Lyu. His youngest and favorite grandson Lyu Junjie (Han Dong) hurries home after working abroad only to realize that he has been excluded as an heir.

Junjie's older brothers have colluded with the Japanese to split the inheritance among themselves. Junjie relies on his own wits and will to overcome many setbacks and expand his business dealings to Nanyang and the Americas. As he ages, Junjie begins to feel homesick and finally decides to return home. At this time, Junjie discovers the real mastermind who plotted the downfall of his own family and seeks to bring down the enemy.
