Synopsis and Plot Summary

Through the eyes of a lovely couple, Court Lady illustrates the daily life of people from different social classes in the Tang Dynasty with a story involving merchants, pirates, public officials, the palace and the war.

The nation is slowly returning to its former glory under the rule of Emperor Li Shimin (Ma Yue). Cheng Chumo (Xu Kai), a famous playboy in Chang An and the son of the duke, falls in love with Fu Rou (Li Yitong) at first sight. When Cheng Chumo learns that Fu Rou likes responsible and talented men, he decides to change his frivolous ways and work hards to improve himself.

Initially taking steps only to win Fu Rou's heart, he witnesses the threats of pirates in the waters and thieves who steal from their own countrymen. Upon realizing his responsibilities, he decides to dedicate his life for the Tang Dynasty and joins the army. Seeing how much Cheng Chumo has sacrificed, Fu Rou is slowly moved by his sincerity and efforts, . However, luck does not seem to be on their side when Fu Rou is appointed as a court lady and cannot stay with Cheng Chumo anymore.

In the palace, Fu Rou uncovers countless corrupt and unjust practices, causing her family to be targeted by powerful officials. Cheng Chumo and his family are also not spared from their wrath. In the face of many life-threatening situations, Cheng Chumo and Fu Rou rely on their wits and will as they work together and strive to live happily.

Fun Facts

Filming took place in Hengdian World Studios.
Filming wrapped after 162 days on August 7, 2019.
According to Yu Zheng, painted murals were a source of inspiration for the drama.
Xu Kai who played Fucha Fuheng in Story of Yanxi Palace was the first cast member to be announced when a photo of the cast together for the script reading was released and only Xu Kai's face was visible.
It is dubbed as the sister production to Story of Yanxi Palace.
In March 2019, Xu Kai and Li Yitong attended a contract signing between TVB and Huanyu Film for the rights to the drama.
Yu Zheng came up with a generous offer to invite Li Yitong as the leading lady of Court Lady but because she was grateful that he had her start in showbiz because of him, she accepted only half.
