Synopsis and Plot Summary
Centered around the protests against the Treaty of Versailles back in 1919, it follows the stories of Li Dazhao, Chen Duxiu and Hu She; from their first time meeting each other through their journeys, differences in beliefs that chronicle the founding of the Communist party of China.
It is the year 1915 when Chen Duxiu (Yu Hewei) started the “New Youth” (Xin Qingnian) publication in Shanghai, pushing for science and democracy as part of the New Culture Movement. Chen Duxiu has always had a troubled relationship with his sons Chen Yannian (Zhang Wanyi) and Chen Qiaonian which become a catalyst for many misunderstandings. At the Peking University Red Building, Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao (Zhang Tong), Hu She (Zhu Gang Ri Yao), Lu Xun (Cao Lei) and Cai Yuanpei (Ma Shaohua) raised the flag of New Youth in opposition to conservatism.
The May Fourth Movement on May 4, 1919 became a turning point that formed the New Culture Movement. Amidst the revolutionary ideas: Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao, Chen Tingnian, and Chen Qiaonian who had clashing ideals before eventually chooses to follow Marxism; while Hu She and his companions pushed for Western thought. New Youth ceased to exist as a new era began to dawn in China.
