Synopsis and Plot Summary
A story that follows the struggles of a retired soldier and Communist party member Huang Xiaohua from the time when she was only 18 until she reached 80 years old.
After the Chinese won the Anti-Japanese Occupation war, a young woman named Huang Xiaohua (Ding Liuyuan) leads a peaceful life in a farming village. She catches the eye of two young men - war hero Wei Shougen (Ding Yongdai) and party branch secretary Tan Shantang (Liu Zhibing) who are both willing to fight over her.
Left with no choice, Huang Xiaohua disguises herself in men's clothes and leaves for another village. She meets military commander Zhao Jingsong (Liu Sibo) and joins him by enlisting in the military as a health worker. The two fall in love yet Huang Shaohua is injured during battle and becomes a vegetable. When she finally wakes up, she starts to search for her lover. Upon learning about his death, she cares for his children until they grow up.
