Synopsis and Plot Summary

A story that follows Huo Sang as he engages in a battle of wits and brawn to solve a dangerous mystery. Can he make it out alive?

The Golden City is a place that lies between the borders of Russia and China. A puzzling murder case occurs leaving indistinguishable clues and people with unknown identities. As Huo Sang faces great odds and even bigger uncertainties, the biggest suspect turns out to be a master of disguise.

Fun Facts

Filming took place in Shanghai and Prague.
Filming lasted over three months beginning on June 2, 2016 and ending on September 8, 2016.
Initially scheduled to be released on January 18, 2019, the movie was postponed due to technical problems.
In order to create the setting of a mysterious era, director Roy Chow chose to film in Prague to give a different view of a Republican era movie. Filming in Prague began in August 2016.
Huo Sang is the titular character of the detective fiction books written by the late Cheng Xiaoqing. Roy Chow thought that his character as a Chinese detective should be known to others.
It was rescheduled to be released on January 25, 2019. However, the movie was postponed again. Han Geng started trending on weibo because many felt bad for him after he wrote a post to say he was emotionally exhausted and resigned. The next day, it was announced that the movie will be released as scheduled.
