Synopsis and Plot Summary
Set from the January 28 incident in 1931 until the Battle of Shanghai in 1937, the story revolves around the Shanghai Bund, a place of flashy dreams and foreign settlements, and follows a love story between a beautiful woman and the man that she loves.
During a time of war, Ping Er (Tang Yan) worked as a maid in the Zhang Family. To her misfortune, she catches the eye of the owner's son Zhang Wenjin (Wilson Gao) and falls victim to his unwanted advances. Chu Jiu (Luo Jin) and Ping Er are forced to escape to Shanghai and assume new identities as Chong Yang and Lian Xin. Starting a new life, Chong Yang engages in hard labor at the docks while Lian Xin learns how to tailor.
Three years pass and Lian Xin gains the approval of Xu Na (Xu Linwen) after making a dress for her. Impressed with Lian Xin's talents, Xu Na refers Lian Xin to work for her mother Xu Hui's (Cecilia Yip) company. Complications arise when Xu Na takes Lian Xin along to visit the He Family. He Tian (Sammul Chan) who is engaged to Xu Na falls for Lian Xin and invites her to dance. Xu Na notices He Tian's actions and openly declares her interest in him. Meanwhile, Chong Yang and He Tian get into a physical altercation over their feelings for Lian Xin. To make matters worse, Zhang Wenjin reads about Lian Xin in the papers and makes a vow to take back Lian Xin at any cost. He sides with the Japanese and heads to Shanghai out for blood.
