Synopsis and Plot Summary
A realistic story that follows the people of Hunan in the face of Japanese invasion. It retells the Changsha fire of 1938 and a series of historical events through the lives of an ordinary family.
In October 1938, the Japanese army heads south towards Changsha. With the onslaught of war, many have chosen to flee the city. The Hu family son-in-law Xue Junshan (Ren Chengwei) and his entire family explore every possibility to arrange a retreat for their twins Xiangxiang (Yang Zi) and Xiaoman (Niu Junfeng).
Xue Junshan introduces Xiangxiang to Gu Qingming (Wallace Huo), a Changsha military man who has returned from abroad. Given Xiangxiang's fiery personality and Gu Qingming's proud and arrogant demeanor, the two clash like ice and fire upon meeting, leaving Xue Junshan no choice but to find another suitor.
At this time, Chiang Kai-shek secretly orders to burn the city to the ground to prevent the Japanese from taking the people's wealth. The fire goes out of hand and decimates the city for three days and three nights, killing tens of thousands in their sleep including the family of Xiangxiang's fiancee. In this land of burnt rubble and ruin, heroic men and women come in droves, determined to use their bodies to protect the old city.
