Synopsis and Plot Summary

A touching story that evokes songs of praise, laughter and tears as it follows a common man's rise from the grassroots to become an extraordinary hero.

There is a saying that goes like this, "The endless night is coming and chaos will descend the human world." Ning Que (Arthur Chen) is a soldier who travels to the capital with his servant Sang Sang (Song Yiren) to seek justice for the untimely deaths of his entire family. Through his determination and hard work, Ning Que earns a spot at a prestigious academy. He becomes the headmaster's treasured disciple, thus bringing him closer to clearing his family's name.

Sang Sang suffers from a strange illness. When Ning Que takes her to the doctor, they learn that Sang Sang is the bringer of the fearsome endless night which could spell the destruction of humanity. The revelation turns them into fugitives overnight. In order to protect Sang Sang, Ning Que escapes with her and starts an adventure into the unknown.

Fun Facts

Filming began in the fall of 2017 in Turpan, Xinjiang and ended in February 2018.
The cast and crew filmed for six months and travelled to many locations in China.
It is Arthur Chen's first drama as the lead. He made his acting debut when he was just 10 years old in the 2010 movie Sacrifice directed by his father Chen Kaige.
The creative team decided to forego bold and bright colors for costumes with a simpler beauty.
A lot of time, effort and a substantial budget was spent on ensuring that shooting took place in actual locations to give viewers breathtaking and realistic sceneries.
Song Yiren said that it feels as though she experienced winter, spring, summer and fall with the cast and crew.
Arthur Chen said that he experienced many things that he has never done before while filming in Xinjiang and Guizhou. There were horses, goats, cows and other animals on the road, living conditions were also challenging.
Although it stars mainly newcomers, it boasts a seasoned veteran cast that includes Leon Lai, Hu Jun, Ni Dahong and Adam Cheng to name a few.
