Synopsis and Plot Summary

A story revolving around the triads in Old Shanghai during the 1930's. A principled man becomes entangled in the complications of the time.

After arriving in Shanghai, Xu Wenqiang (Huang Xiaoming) crosses paths with Feng Jingyao (Li Xuejian), a big shot in the business world, and his daughter Feng Chengcheng (Sun Li). Xu Wenqiang finds a resemblance between the beautiful and stubborn Feng Chengcheng and his past lover Fan Yanyun (Chen Shu) who has become famous within the social circles of Shanghai.

Through a chance encounter, Xu Wenqiang and Ding Li (Huang Haibo) rescue Feng Chengcheng from danger. Xu Wenqiang and Ding Li become good friends and they end up working under Feng Jingyao upon the recommendation of Fan Yanyun. Both men fall in love with Feng Chengcheng, thus starting a complicated romance in the context of a greater story about a man's pursuit of vengeance and his loyalty to his country.

Fun Facts

During a fight scene that they filmed for three days, Huang Haibo and Huang Xiaoming kept their energy level up for over 50 hours. They were completely exhausted by the end. According to Huang Haibo, he can barely remember the lines they said in that scene.
In this version of The Bund, Xu Wenqiang evolves from a triad member into a patriotic hero that participates in anti-Japanese occupational efforts during the Republican era.
