Synopsis and Plot Summary

A Chinese doctor who rallies his fellow doctors to put up a fight against a mandate to abolish traditional Chinese medicine encounters many roadblocks as he tries desperately to keep a piece of the nation's heritage alive.

Set during the Republican Era in Shanghai, the story connects seven medical cases. Wong Quanhai (Chen Baoguo) is the successor of the Menghe School of Thought. Having practiced medicine for many years, he goes from starting his own clinic in his hometown to starting a practice in Shanghai. His high moral values and exceptional skills earn him a reputation as a well-respected doctor.

In the year 1920, scarlet fever becomes prevalent in the city. The Western doctors exploit the opportunity to belittle traditional Chinese medicine and increase the cost of drugs. In the year 1929, the Nationalist government promulgate a legislation to abolish Chinese medicine. After Shanghai falls into the hands of the enemy, Wong Quanhai is targeted by the Japanese for the crime of helping Communists. Despite the difficult road ahead of him, Wong Quanhai remains faithful to his calling as a doctor.
