Synopsis and Plot Summary

During the reign of Yongzheng Emperor, a woman whose first love marries another finds herself having to navigate the political machinations within the palace on her own.

Lian Er (Yuan Shanshan), the daughter of a 4th ranking public official, meets the 17th Royal Highness Yun Li (Du Chun) on her father's behalf. The two fall in love and plan to marry. However, Yun Li ends up having to marry his teacher's daughter Jia Jia (Hai Lu) because it is the only way to save him. Devastated, Lian Er treads carefully as she tries to survive within the palace walls.

Unwilling to be swept along the tide of politics, Li Wei (Wang Yang) wants to form an alliance with her. The head eunuch Su Peisheng (Bao Bei'er) wants to return a debt to her. Yu Shu (Zhang Jiani) who is like a sister to her becomes her enemy. The extravagant palace hides many dangers that threaten to swallow her whole. Lian Er inadvertently catches the eye of Yongzheng Emperor (He Mingshan) and she realizes that things become even more complicated.

Fun Facts

It is the second installment in the Gong franchise and the sequel to Palace 1 aka Jade Palace Lock Heart.
Filming began on August 11, 2011.
There were plagiarism accusations against Yu Zheng claiming that the drama is a combination of Home Temptation, Legend of Zhen Huan and Palace 1.
After filming began, there were claims Tong Liya stood up the production team and left them without a leading lady. Tong Liya's spoke out against the rumors.
Of the main characters from the original, He Shengming reprises his role as the Yongzheng Emperor.
As the main leads of Palace 1, Yang Mi and Feng Shaofeng have cameos in the sequel.
For taking on the leading role, Yuan Shanshan received a lot of negative reviews from netizens who went as far as to ask her to leave (lit. roll out of) the entertainment industry. In response to the haters, Yuan Shanshan uploaded a picture where she was rolling on the floor.
Wang Yang's role as Li Wei was one of the last casting decision for the production. Wang Yang has not been in a costume drama for six years so he was excited and happy to take on the role.
