Synopsis and Plot Summary

A complicated story involving crime, passion and romance between two people that spans over fifteen years.

During the year 2001 at the outskirts of Shanxi lived Qiao Qiao, a young dancer who is in a relationship with Bin, a local gangster. Bin is out and about everyday with his friends and busy with his business dealings while Qiao Qiao simply wishes to tie the knot soon. Because of a clash with other gangs, Qiao Qiao witnesses Bin getting assaulted on the street and in a fit of panic, she finds his gun and fires it at will. Qiao Qiao is sentenced to five years in prison. After her release, she sets out to find Bin only to realize that things are no longer as they were.

Filming began on November 29, 2017 in Shanxi, China.
It is Jia Zhangke's most expensive movie to date even though he considers the film to be an indie like his other works. It is his fifth film to be chosen as part of the official selection of Cannes Film Festival.
Jia Zhangke and Zhao Tao are married in real life. The two have worked together many times before.
Despite not being a household name in China, Zhao Tao is a multi-awarded actress who has received critical acclaim internationally.
