Synopsis and Plot Summary
A story revolving around two university students who encounter chilling events after travelling to a remove village to film a documentary about fortunetelling.
Liu Meng (He Jia) and Ding Xin (Tong Tianwen) have arrived at a village in Shandong Province to understand how superstitious beliefs arise. Through their documentary, they hope to expose the truth behind the supposed beliefs.
Wang Po (Feng Danju) Is a famous fortuneteller in the area. Whenever someone in the village is possessed, she is always invited to perform a ritual to chase away the bad spirits. After becoming acquainted with her, Liu Meng and Ding Xin accompany Wang Po and Wang Shu (Wen Zhong Xue) to exorcise a person named Chen Li (Jia Yuan Yuan). However, things go awry when they find themselves trapped and all their attempts to leave blocked by unseen forces.

- It was initially scheduled to premiere on April 4, 2018 but was delayed 4 days prior to its release due to technical reasons.
- Horror flicks typically have a hard time passing China's censorship board as supernatural elements are not allowed unless it is explained with science. The movie did manage to pass censorship reviews, but ultimately got a delayed release.
- According to Director Ma Kai, The Possessed is inspired by Hollywood films like Paranormal Activity and The Blair With Project.
- Despite having a low-budget, the movie is being praised by film critics and won an award in 2016.
- Ma Kai is the producer, screenwriter and director of the film.
- Filming began in November 2015 and lasted for 18 days.
- Filming took place in Linyi City of Shandong Province, China.
- The entire crew was only 11 people including 6 actors.
- The estimated budget for the film was RMB 50,000. However, leading man Dong Tianwen got into an accident. One night, while filming a running scene, he fell of a mountain slope and hurt his waist. The production spent an additional RMB 20,000 for his hospital fees.
- Due to Dong Tianwen's accident, he could no longer continue filming which is why Ma Kai decided to change the ending.
