Synopsis and Plot Summary

A story revolving around a stand in who lives like a shadow to the person that he's meant to protect.

Since the olden times, whenever there is killing, there is a shadow who must step up at the most critical moment to risk his life for his master. The shadow must become one with his master, confusing others as to who's real and who's not. Is it the one in the light or the one hiding in darkness? Who would you choose to be?

Filming took place in Beijing and Xiangyang.
Filming lasted four months from March 18, 2017 to July 16, 2017.
It is Zhang Yimou's next movie after The Great Wall.
Deng Chao plays two roles, which he filmed separately.
Many of the cast members have connections to the variety show Keep Running, which is the Chinese version of Running Man. Deng Chao and Ryan Zheng Kai are regulars of Keep Running. Deng Chao and Sun Li are married in real life and Guan Xiaotong is dating Luhan.
When filming wrapped, Deng Chao gifted Zhang Yimou with a director's chair. In turn, Zhang Yimou gave Deng Chao his own chair signed with, "Had a great time working with Deng Chao."
Before filming began, Deng Chao started working out. Towards the end of filming, he has lost around 40 jin.
