Synopsis and Plot Summary
Zhang Xiao, a white-collar worker of the 21st century, suffers a near-fatal accident and finds herself sucked through a wormhole and trapped in the body of a 16-years old teenage girl, Ma'ertai Ruoxi.
Unlike the conservative girls of the era, Ruoxi (Cecilia Liu) is very outspoken and straightforward. She dares to bicker with the princes and fight with the princesses and even the Emperor (Damian Lau) laughs and admires her brave personality. As years passed by, she slowly matures and is appointed to be the servant of the emperor. With this, Ruoxi becomes involved in the bloody competition of the princes for the throne. Her feelings and emotions become entangled with the bitterness and torment of the palace.
The eighth prince's (Kevin Cheng) cool and amiable personality slowly gains the admiration of Ruoxi. Adding to that, she hears that the eighth prince is madly in love with her sister (Annie Lau) while her sister has someone else in mind, making Ruoxi sympathize with him. His gentle actions toward Ruoxi establishes a sense of security as she falls for him. Ruoxi wholeheartedly loves the eighth prince and advices him to stop fighting for the throne. At the same time, she becomes moved by the fourth prince (Nicky Wu) who has stood forward to shield her from danger time and again and she makes a choice between the two men. However, she doesn't realize that history has already been written in stone and that she is the catalyst that has started it all.

- It is produced by Karen Tsai of Chinese Entertainment Corp. (Tangren) and Lee Kwok Lap.
- Filming took place in Hengdian World Studios.
- It shot up to popularity after its premiere bringing much fame to the cast especially the three main leads.
- Nicky Wu and Kevin Cheng who were already in their forties and have already enjoyed the highs and lows through in the industry reached a new height in their careers.
- Cecilia Liu and Nicky Wu announced that they were dating in 2013. They registered their marriage on January 20, 2015 and held a beach wedding at the Anyana Resort in Bali on March 20, 2015. Many members of their entourage were also from Scarlet Heart such as Annie Liu, Yuan Hong and Guo Xiao Ting. Even the wedding invitation was inspired by the magnolia flower, which is significant to the drama.
- Due to the drama's success all over Asia, it earned a Korean drama remake titled Scarlet Heart Ryeo led by IU and Li Joon Ki. However, it failed to achieve high ratings during its run.
- The story takes place during a time when the nine sons of the Emperor fought over the throne. In history, that time is recorded as the Nine Lord War during the reign of Kangxi.
- Scarlet Heart cast members Cecilia Liu, Nicky Wu, Kevin Cheng and Yuan Hong became new parents in 2019.
