Synopsis and Plot Summary
A story that details Wang Xizhi's long and arduous journey to become a famous calligrapher.
Set during the end of Western Jin and the beginning of Eastern Jin, a young Wang Xizhi (Wu Lipeng) who has no care for literature grew up fascinated with martial arts. However, his father Wang Kuang (Wang Bozhao) and uncle Wang Dao (Liang Guanhua) have always believed in Wang Xizhi's exceptional talent for calligraphy, so they hire Madame Wei (Tang Yumeng), the most famous and respected expert in the field, to be his teacher.
The country has been in chaos since Eastern Jin moved its capital to the South, and trying times have caused Wang Xizhi to mature rapidly. Mirroring his life experience is his relationship with lover Chi Rui (Kim Tae Hee) that also faces many ups and downs. Even so, the trials and tribulations encountered by Wang Xizhi prove to be a motivation for him. He continuous to improve his skills to become known throughout history for his mastery of Chinese calligraphy.
Fun Facts
- Filming took place at Xiang Shan Movie & TV Town, Qing Dao and other locations. The cast also filmed for 3 days in Lin Yi City.
- Filming lasted five months and ended on October 31, 2018.
- It is meant to be a literary work brought by the collaboration of the Lin Yi City government and production companies.
- It boasts an international collaboration between Japanese, Chinese and Korean artists.
- Korean actress Kim Tae Hee was scheduled to start filming in June 2014. However, there are very few pictures from the production. She attended the press conference to introduce the drama along with the cast.
- Asked why Kim Tae Hee chose this project out of the dozens of offers, she explains that it is an honor to depict the esteemed calligrapher's story and that she views the drama's emphasis on the arts as an opportunity to promote Chinese and Korean culture. She also noted complete trust in the director Zhang Xianglin who is a calligrapher himself.
- The title-character Wang Xizhi is generally regarded as the greatest Chinese calligrapher in history.
- It is part of the dramas that were affected by the Hallyu Ban, an unofficial ban that was in effect in China to restrict all forms of Hallyu aka Korean Wave due to the political disagreement between China and Korea over THAAD.
