Synopsis and Plot Summary

Another chapter in the Candle in the Tomb series tells the story of Hu Bayi and his tomb-raiding adventures.

Set in the 1980s, Hu Bayi (Ethan Ruan), a famous middle-aged tomb expert, is packing his things for a trip abroad when he stumbles upon an old photo. It brings back memories of his college days back in the 1960's with his two best friends Wang Kaixuan (Ryan Liu Chao) and Ding Sitian (Hao Hao) along with the eccentric but tough as nails Hua Mei (Xu Lu). He then reminisced the time they first met and their subsequent adventures as they raided tombs.

Fun Facts

• Although it is the second installment of the Candle in the Tomb series, it is the prequel to the 2016 Candle in the Tomb starring Jin Dong and Joe Chen.
• There were many changes in the adaptation compared to the novel.
• Filming took place in Inner Mongolia, Zheng Zhou and Beijing.
• Filming started in November 2016 and ended on January 23, 2017.
• Director Guan Hu had a strict requirement that the cast couldn't use their phones on set.
• Even though Ethan Ruan's Mandarin may have a Taiwanese accent, Guan Hu and the actor decided after many rounds of discussion to refrain from hiring a voice actor. They decided that using Ethan's voice will provide a more realistic portrayal. Moreover, Hu Bayi before joining the army was from Fujian.
• Tencent has rights to adapt eight novels from the Ghost Blows Out the Light series.
