Synopsis and Plot Summary

A story about the Heaven's way and the anomalies that arise. Monkey was formed out of a rock three hundred years ago. Unwilling to accept his fate, he stands up against destiny in order to change the future.

Monkey (Raymond Lam) starts on a road towards immortal cultivation to save himself. The journey is difficult and treacherous, but he gets saved by the golden feathered canary (Angelina Jiang) who sacrifices her own life for him. Vowing to resurrect her, he travels far and wide to come under the tutelage of a master. Along the way, he becomes entangled in a complicated relationship with the innocent Feng Ling (Eva Chang) and the prideful Yang Chan (Jiang Mengjie). He also gets caught in a fight between the demons and the heavenly realm.



Fun Facts

  • Filming took place in Hengdian World Studios.
  • It is Raymond Lam's first time playing a mythological hero. He did his own stunts for the drama.
  • It is singer Kenji Wu's first time acting in a fantasy drama. He plays Tian Peng, a character that is known as the Zhu Ba Jie (Pig Demon) in Journey to the West.
  • Author Jia Yu Bu Shi Gui is a fan of A Step Into the Past. Da Po Hou's character arc is modelled after the Qin Emperor was also played by Raymond Lam.
  • Jin Akanishi started learning about Yang Jian after taking on the role and he gained a better understanding of Chinese mythology.
  • Jin Akanishi used English to communicate with the cast but while filming, he would deliver his lines in Japanese and often had to give his cast mates cues so that they would know when to start speaking.
  • Jin Akanishi worked out for three months for the role.
  • Jiang Mengjie who has a background in ballet was not afraid to take on the action sequences.
  • Kenji Wu would listen to music in preparation for emotional scenes.
  • Raymond Lam's Monkey King costume weighs around 10 jin. His makeup would take 4 hours to complete.
  • Raymond Lam had 11 sets of clothes that aptly represent his journey throughout the drama.
