Synopsis and Plot Summary
The continuation of Empresses in the Palace revolves around the heart-wrenching romance and politics surrounding Consort Ulanala Ruyi and Emperor Qianlong.
In the year 1735, Qianlong (Wallace Huo) took the throne and takes the hand of his childhood friend Ulanala Ruyi (Zhou Xun) in marriage as she becomes a palace consort in accordance with tradition. Since then, a story of love and tragedy follows their journey. Because of her relationship with the Emperor, Ruyi is often ostracized by her peers. Her family has long been enemies of the Empress Dowager (Wu Jun Mei) and she faces danger on all sides. The Emperor also deals with challenges of his own as he struggles to get away from the control of the Empress Dowager and to regain the power that has stayed in the hands of old court officials

Fun Facts
- It is produced by New Classics Media.
- Filming took place in Hengdian World Studios, Beijing, Wulan Butong Tourism Area and Mudu.
- Filming lasted around eight months beginning August 23, 2016 and ending May 5, 2017.
- It is one of the most anticipated IP productions as it was the long-awaited sequel to Legend of Zhen Huan. It is the second collaboration between Wallace Huo and Zhou Xun who also starred in the movie Our Time Will Come.
- Before filming began, Wallace Huo and Zhou Xun went to the Forbidden City together to familiarize themselves with the history of the Qing Dynasty.
- Veteran actress Vivian Wu plays the role of Zhen Huan which was the main protagonist of the prequel.
- Initially scheduled to air from Monday to Thursday, the weekly broadcast was extended by a day to air from Monday to Friday beginning September 2018.
- Tong Yao is known as little Zhang Ziyi.
- There were complaints that the forty-something Zhou Xun looked too old for the role. According to the Director, the beginning episodes where Zhou Xun played a 15-year-old young maiden was not part of the novel. However, they decided it was best to include it in the story. The beginning episodes were the last scenes that were filmed which is why the cast looked extremely tired.
- Director Wang Jun admitted in an interview that he regretted taking on the project despite the drama's popularity and success. Wang Jun reveals that, in the process of filming, he was also tired and had wanted to give up several times and the production was taxing on the actors as well. Wang Jun took care to ensure that drama conveyed the proper emotion which led to the snail's pace of filming. The final production yielded 120 episode total over the course of nine months and the actors tolled 17-18 hours a day just to complete it.
- In September 2018, Wallace Huo Studio suddenly announced that the actor will no longer be using weibo. He will communicate with fans solely through his works. Many speculated that the reason he left weibo was due to the hate for his character in Ruyi.
