Synopsis and Plot Summary

A crime solving film with a touch of comedy that follows an uncle and his nephew who are on the run from the cops and the mob while on a trail to find a missing treasure.

Qin Feng (Liu Hao Ran) fails his police academy examinations and he is sent to Thailand to live with Tang Ren (Wang Bao Qiang), a distant uncle who has earned the title of Detective Chinatown. However, Tang Ren gets accused of a crime he did not commit such that he and Qin Feng become fugitives overnight. They only have seven days to find the missing gold, catch the real culprit and prove their innocence, all while running for their lives.

  • It is Chen Si Cheng's second project as Director after Beijing Love Story
  • Back when Chen Si Cheng was filming Beijing Love Story, he was already planning for Detective Chinatown and thought that Liu Haoran would be able to take the role of Qin Feng.
  • Aside from writing the script for the movie, Chen Si Cheng wrote a detailed backstory for the two main characters that follows their lives up to the point that they went to Thailand.
  • Qin Feng having photographic memory was inspired by the Chinese reality show Super Brain of which Chen Si Cheng is a big fan.
  • Wang Bao Qiang was accidentally injured before filming began. Chen Si Cheng was determined to keep him as the actor and delayed filming for 40 days.
  • Wang Bao Qiang lost a tooth while filming and decided to replace it with a shining gold tooth that matches his flashy character.
  • When the movie first premiered, Chen Si Cheng was already making plans for the 2nd and 3rd movie to be filmed in the US and in Japan.
  • It marks Wang Bao Qiang's return to comedy after Lost In Thailand.
  • Liu Hao Ran who was seventeen at the time rose in popularity since the movie and eventually landed the coveted role as the lead in Nirvana in Fire 2.
  • The movie which became a box office hit was nominated for and won numerous accolades.
